As an artist in the Charles Village Harwood Community Tamara Payne had an opportunity to partner with The GreaterHomewood Association as well as The Barclay School in order to propose a mosaic mural funded by PNC Bank. This projects focus was to honor the history of the Charles Village/Harwood/Abell Community. After meeting with the schools community organizers, key community people and local historian JoAnn Robinson of the Abell Community in July 2011, Tamara then went on to facility community workshops that were led in the Barclay School's first floor music wing. Another school communty artist worked with Tamara to facilitate clay workshops during the month of July. The workshops were held four days a week. Tamara went on to facilitate many other glass community workshops in her home and throughout the community while collaborating with local carpenters Torrence Williams and Ryan Parnell for the mosaics install during the months of August and September of 2011. 
Quilting For Social Justice with Dr. Joan Gaither
On January 31, 2011 Dr. Joan Gaither, a documentary story quilter began a
"Quilting for Social Justice workshop with the MACA Creative Collective team here at The Maryland Institiute College of Art. Joan, a native Baltimorean has had a history of helping to integrate local schools and businesses during the Civil Rights Movement. Receiving a BS Degree from Morgan State University (an historic Black College) in 1965 and her Phd from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee in 1998, Joan say's, "I continue to strive for the Perpetual Energy Source Award that honored my ability to model and facilitate intergenerational participation in art education, public schools, and community arts participation. This high energy combined with an extroverted personality allows me to give a new meaning to multi tasking."
"As an artist, I've discovered that my voice is informed by an interest in mixed media, fibers, and photographic images that allow close scrutiny of surfaces and metaphors for personal meaning."
Below: Delaware's Wilmington Montessori School
The pictures below are images that reflect my 3 weeks as an artist in residence at Wilmington's Wilmington Montessori School in spring of "2010". Wilmington Motessori School is a private school in Delaware that provides children with a nuturing environment that fosters lifelong learning, independant thinking and awareness about global community. It is a coed and nonsectarian, serving about 366 students in grades PK-6. During my stay here i had the opportunity to work with the entire school community on two individual mosaic projects. Week 1 toddlers-1st grades worked on individual mosaic tiles and week 2 grades 2nd - 6th grades worked on a large mosaic glass design resembleing the school logo. It was very important to the school adult community that every child at Wilmington's Wilmington Montessori have an opportunity to experience the mosaic making process. Many of the primary grades used treasures they had collected over a period of a few weeks to create mosaic tiles while the upper classes worked on a much more rigorous project with glass and stone pavers. And lastly, the third week the staff, parent volunteers and children were given an opportunity to work with me in an open studio forum in putting the finishing touches on both mosaic projects.
