Artist Statement

I am interested in design, more specifically, interaction design and have a deep desire to teach. Evidence of this aspiration is found early in my life. As a grade school student, I felt a deep connection with my creative ability and the all too apparent fortune of a supportive environment only fostered that creativity. I work in art and design because I find fulfillment in creation on this level. I am studying to become a teacher, because I do not feel knowledge and experience should be locked away for my use alone. If anything, my desire to teach works in hand with interaction design, a field that often finds growth in the sharing of information freely.

I currently design and build websites, experiment in data visualization, and explore the world of game design. I have come to this gradually. My chronological portfolio provides the evidence. Entering college my work was often based in the realm of 2 dimensional arts. I would create either on the computer or in traditional media and place my work on a wall. As I developed as an artist, I came to the realization that this was not enough for me. I wanted more. This is when I turned to web design and interactive media. Today, both I and the field in which I work have changed. The field is Interaction Design and my business card displays the tagline, “Art, Design, Education.”

As a 5th year candidate of the 5-year, Master of Arts in Teaching Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I look back with confidence at the experiences I have been through, and how I succeed today because of them. I am detail oriented and understand that good design results from a series of well thought out decisions. A design is dissected, analyzed, and reconstructed to make sure it fulfills its intended purpose. This is a fundamental of design. A fundamental made only more apparent in interaction design, where a misplaced character can break an entire project. I thrive in this world of meticulous detail where I fulfill this deep, personal need to create.
