The MA in Community Arts school year begins in June with each graduate student being paired with a community site to facilitate Maryland Institute College of Arts' five week Summer Art Institute. The MICA / MACA partnership, along with the Summer Coalition for the Arts aims to provide quality arts-based program experiences for children and youth three days a week, from late June through late July.

MICA's Summer Institute provides a platform for experiential learning and leadership development opportunities. Graduate students enrolled in the MACA and MAT graduate programs, along with undergraduate students pursuing their degree in Art Education, and high school interns from participating sites’ communities come together to facilitate numerous community-based programs each summer.

Graduate students and community arts project facilitators develop and implement arts-related Action Plans and build relationships with youth, host organizations and their facilitation teams on-site. Jumping head-first into this community work is a fun and enlightening introduction to community arts in Baltimore.
