Photo Stand-In: Community Art Project with Youth from Dr. Rayner Browne Academy and the "Y" of Central Maryland.
In this proposed project, we built upon the life-drawing and physical art activities explored in our workshops to create a culminating piece that incorporates skills developed throughout the school year and one that celebrates the talents and creative energies of the youth and the community that the "Y" supports.
In June, Dr. Rayner Browne Academy holds an end-of-the-year carnival on the school grounds to celebrate the students’ achievements. Our ‘carnival photo stand-in’ will be a culminating group art project. This “photo stand-in,” is a large painting on stretched canvases with a holes cut out, so that people may put their own face into the image, “stand inside” the painting, and be photographed.
Anne and I have worked together and with the youth to generate the composition of the piece using gestural and active human forms as the basis for the imagery. The design was composed and laid out by the youth and with the help of the MACA students. This large painting provided broad participation from the youth in the Y program.
On the day of the carnival, the finished piece will be set up as a photo booth. Digital SLR cameras will be operated by Anne and I along with youth assistants who've demonstrated leadership and responsibility throughout the year. Families and visitors from the community will get a nice portrait taken. And we have received a grant which will support us in printing and distributing the photos as gifts to the families, "Y" and Community Partners.
More to come!
