Dr. Rayner Browne Academy Travels to Dancers and families travel to Dance Exchange to Perform in Youth Arts Night.

Photo Stand-In: Community Art Project with Youth from Dr. Rayner Browne Academy and the "Y" of Central Maryland.

In this proposed project, we aim to build upon the life-drawing and physical art activities explored in these workshops to create a culminating piece that incorporates skills developed throughout the school year.

In June, Dr. Rayner Browne Academy will hold an end-of-the-year carnival on the school grounds to celebrate the students’ achievements. We propose to create a ‘carnival photo stand-in’ as a culminating group art project. This “photo stand-in,” will consist of a large painting on stretched canvas with a hole cut out of it so that people may put their own face into the image, “stand inside” the painting, and be photographed.

Anne and Alexis will work with the youth to generate the composition of the piece using gestural and active human forms as the basis for the imagery. The design will be composed and laid out by the youth and with the help of the MACA students. This large painting will provide a means for broad participation from the youth in the Y program. There are a number of parents who also may be leveraged as volunteers and artists as well. This too will provide an opportunity for intergenerational teaching, learning, art making and community building.

On the day of the carnival, the finished piece will be set up as a photo booth. Digital SLR cameras will be operated by Alexis, Anne and youth assistants who've demonstrated leadership and responsibility throughout the year. Families and visitors from the community will get a nice portrait taken.
